Top Billing visits the SofnFree Hair Xperts Challenge
From a national search for the best talent in black hair, seventy stylists were chosen. They were cut down to the Final eight and now, as Bongani Nhlapho knows, there can be only one.
The last eighteen endured seven weeks of intense challenges and unfortunately, they had to say goodbye to one finalist at the end of every challenge, while the rest of the best styled for their lives.
The purpose was to discover raw and extraordinary talent in the South African black hairdressing industry.

The look of the evening was an expression of the Avant Garde – inventive and futuristic. The judges were seeking work that brings new life to the industry taking risks and experimenting with fresh ideas
While competition from Kwa Zulu Natal was fierce, 2017 was Free State’s year and for his creation, winner Treavor Makoaleli took home a quarter of a million Rand.

As well as the big winners, the unseen benefits of The Challenge are how many local hairstylists, from all walks of life, have come to the fore in the past few months of competition. The surest sign of our ever vibrant, black hair care industry.
