Top Billing meets the cast of Gibson Kente's musical drama How Long?
After an absence of 45 years, Gibson Kente's musical drama How Long? returns to the South African stage in a prestigious new production.
A dramatic musical with political undertones, How Long? is a gripping theatre production that once put its creator in prison. Now, decades later, it’s back with a bang, to show off a host of local talent as well as honour the man whose creative vision, once ahead of its time, is not to be forgotten.
Gibson Kente wrote How Long? to reflect the lives of black people in early seventies South Africa. Wildly popular in the townships, it was banned and this production at the Durban Playhouse, directed by Duma Ndlovu, is the first staging since 1973.
The production, choreographed by Somizi Mhlongo, is backed by a six piece band, a thirteen piece orchestra and the cast is led by a top ensemble including TV star, Khaya Dladla.
Khaya has been such a hit on Uzalo, as the hairstylist GC, that when he disappeared for a short break from the storyline, the public panicked. But he returned, to great relief. While the actor is more reserved in his behaviour than his character, his dress sense is anything but restrained and social media loves it.
How Long? runs at the Playhouse Opera Theatre until the 27th May 2018.
