When chef Karo Van Tonder steps out of the kitchen it’s into the record books as the fastest Female windsurfer in Africa!
Karo Van Tonder feels the need for speed and the wind in her hair, except she doesn’t rely on horsepower to get there. She’s the fastest woman in Africa and all she requires is a slightly stronger than average breeze.
Karo has progressed from a teenage enthusiast to a continental record holder and as more and more sponsors come on board, she aims to join the world circuit as a professional.
With few South African women competing in the sport, our champion is more than happy to encourage new recruits. It’s a full body workout, offers a mental break from everyday stresses, and it’s a highly social scene.
The giant leap in Karo’s career happened when she became a team rider for an Australian sail brand, got the best racing equipment and saw her skill levels rocket. Seeing this bombshell cross water at seventy kilometres an hour, got the attention of agents, who approached her to endorse everything from swimwear to a line of skincare products. It is not the easiest sport but the years of dedication are paying off.
The icing on her catering and windsurfing success is that the champ recently launched her lifestyle blog “Karolife” and her own sports and leisurewear brand. What a woman.
