Top Billing goes on a royal safari with Princess Michael of Kent
Because Cheetahs don’t have nine lives, Princess Michael of Kent steps in to help.
In the race to save our precious rhino, we may be losing sight of the threat our cheetahs are facing. Thankfully their cause has been taken up by Royal warrior for wildlife - Princess Michael of Kent - who was in South Africa to launch her book ‘A Cheetah’s Tale’.
Princess Michael of Kent is a member of the British royal family and is married to Queen Elizabeth II’s first cousin, Prince Michael of Kent. The Princess was an interior designer before becoming an author and she has written several books on European royalty - mostly her cousins. She does lecture tours, supports her husband in his public duties and is often seen at royal family gatherings and public engagements. Amongst the many charities she is involved with is as Patron of the Endangered Species Centre here in Hoedspruit, Limpopo. We were here to highlight the work of this facility focusing on conservation and the sustainability of rare, vulnerable species.
Lente Roode’s centre is actively involved in research and breeding of endangered animal species. The centre educates schoolchildren, students and the public in conservation and the Princess helps to highlight one of their core programmes - the release and establishment of captive-bred cheetahs in the wild. Work which Her Royal Highness has a natural feel for.
In Johannesburg, the launch of the new book ‘A Cheetah’s Tale’ was hosted by Philanthropist Ivor Ichikowitz, founder of the Ichikowitz Family Foundation.
Her Royal Highness has authored several non-fiction books and novels before this latest work.
There were conservation activists of all ages there on the night which is cause for optimism.
With many worthwhile causes demanding our attention, cheetahs may not make the loudest noise so it is good that they have a royal champion to make them heard.
We hope our cheetah populations stabilize, begin to climb and if they do - the name of Princess Michael will rightly be credited as a warrior of the cause.
