Top Billing features the all woman team of Chocoloza With orders in the hundreds of thousands, the all-woman A-Team at Chocoloza create proudly African chocolates that we just can’t get enough of!
The idea of what makes a product ‘African’ constantly evolves. At Chocoloza they use the finest Belgian chocolate as a vehicle - to bring us the tastes of Ethiopian coffee, Khoisan salt, Marula fruit and other flavours unique to our continent.
You can read about Chocoloza on their website but it’s far tastier to drop by their Milpark workshop. Here they encourage visitors to watch their hand-made, sustainably sourced chocolates being crafted by an all-woman team including founder Vicki Bain.
With their Belgian chocolate, Vicki insists that they use fair trade coffee, seasonal local fruits and that they champion local, South African flavours, like granadilla.
There are no preservatives, artificial flavours or aromas in these recipes. They won’t use palm oil because it’s bad for the environment and their process is open for all to see.
Natural food colouring is used to coat their moulds and once the chocolates are set, they don’t freeze them to make the product last longer. Each one is freshly made.
It adds to the sense of enjoyment knowing that all of the milk, cream and butter used here is organic especially since they are not shy with their butter. With the studio and this whole process behind glass and on view to customers, buying chocolate is a total experience.
The crew love a challenge and they are regularly commissioned to whip up new flavours and combinations for special occasions. It keeps the team excited.
Beyond just allowing you to watch the process, the workshop regularly hosts chocolate adventure evenings, which includes blind tasting and letting you try your hand in the workshop and take your creations home. Jonathan felt honoured that he’d been allowed to join this all girl A-team – even if only for a day.
For your own escape into this world of chocolate you’ll find it at 44 Stanley Avenue in Milpark.
