When you moved from house to house as a child but could never call it your own, building the ultimate, modern family home is a lifelong dream come true.
It’s been a long road for the man of the house who moved fifteen times as a child, but with an education, hard work and prayer, he and his wife have forged their own destiny.
Being a civil engineer in the construction business, the house has the confidence of a grand, engineering project but the intimacy of a family home. The work by architect Etienne Stols, adds texture and variation just like interior design.
The tranquil effect of the water softens the modern lines and on entering, you are welcomed into a warm glow of light and neutral colours. Interior designer Liezel Viljoen shared this family’s excitement at shaping their dream. The use of anti-glare lighting allows you to focus on the ceilings and floating slabs. For a more lively evening, the family lounge combines light and dark tones, a leather sofa and abstract, hand-knotted rug. Delicate lighting from a chandelier gives the dining room a romantic flair and the carpet and curtains merge to lend an intimate feel in an open space.
Talking about merging spaces, the owners’ cars are also included in the interior design. The kitchen is a showstopper and you immediately look forward to having brunch at the breakfast-bar.
From growing up, never having a home of your own, to this - it is testament to what a family can achieve in one generation – given education and even half a chance.
