Top Billing features interior designer Grant Horak’s North Coast home
This week we take you into interior designer Grant Horak’s Zimbali mansion from the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. With two swimming pools really takes the cake when it comes to the good life!
The property offered an exquisite location on the Indian Ocean with ample space to allow for tropical architecture infused with Indonesian and Thai flavours.
The estate is influenced by Sri-Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa’s style of ‘Tropical Modernism’, which saw a rebirth of Asian culture and its export worldwide.
It was pretty easy for the owner Grant Horak to see the potential that this beautiful location has as he was also the home’s designer.
The pool courtyard lends Eastern serenity to the home. Complimenting the sculptural frangipani tree are Balinese carvings, which were actually shipped to Grant by mistake. Fortunately it fit in perfectly! As for the kitchen chandelier, it was too big for the doorway so they broke a wall down to get it in.
Balancing all the different styles was key for the design. Grant’s colleague, Paulo Da Rosa, oversaw the renovation. Every piece acquired for the project, over eight years of travel, had to find a home.
After twenty years of creating dream retreats for his clients, Grant now finally has one of his own.
