Top Billing catches up with racing legend Alfie Cox
In motorbike racing, Alfie Cox is a name that stands a hundred feet tall and spells a life lived on its own terms. Alfie is a legend of that most impossible of races, The Paris – Dakar, and it is clear that bikes are in his blood.
The South African enduro biker gained international respect when he raced the world’s toughest rally, the Dakar, for the first time without a support crew and crossed the finish line in fourth place. Alfie doesn’t give up easily, if ever, and it’s a motto he’s definitely passed on to his sons, 18 year old Brad and 7 year old Trey.
Alfie’s trophy room proudly showcases his nine Roof of Africa wins and top five Dakar finishes, but wife Hazel knows the full story of that 10 000km journey. They’ve been married for 26 years and she’s seen what challenges Alfie has faced on the race track. Now his sons can take his biking legacy further, while he will stick to racing rally cars for now!
