Top Billing celebrates SA rugby player, Hencus van Wyk and his picture pretty bride Chanelda Douglas’ wedding.
This couple excel in two different kinds of contact sport. Hencus in Super Rugby and Chanelda in law. While he has become a cornerstone of the Sunwolves team in Tokyo, she has graduated with an LLB and is currently a senior candidate attorney – soon to be admitted to the bar. Both from small towns in Limpopo, they have big career prospects and now find their greatest support and motivation in each other.
Hencus proposed at Hartebeespoort Dam and for their wedding they decided to bring it on home to Limpopo where family and childhood friends could all attend. There would be no sushi or cherry blossoms at the wedding though. The Cape Dutch venue owned by a childhood friend of Chanelda’s was decked out in a mix of bohemian and bushveld. Proteas and burgundy flowers around wire baobab trees and a brilliantly original cake by the groom’s two aunts, grandmother and his mother, Marleen Joubert.
The groom loves his bride to be for the decidedly smart head she has on her shoulders and her beauty he sees as a bonus. The bride’s grandfather Robert Groenewald gave her away. Her mother Amelda Groenewald was the wedding planner.
Clubs from The Bulls to The Lions have valued Hencus as a robust prop forward. How he would fare on the dancefloor was something former team-mate Corne Fourie looked forward to seeing.
After the wedding, they’re off to live in Japan for a while where - most importantly - they’ll be together. Travel is top of their list – and dancing like nobody’s watching.
