Jason Bricknell serves up another great design
Our Top Billing location home this week is definitely one for the books and designer Jason Bricknell was there to give us the grand tour of the Art deco dazzler of a home! This Mediterranean inspired design is the fifth Joburg property that this family have lived in and they had very clear ideas of what they wanted. With their son at varsity, the idea was to move closer to their daughter’s school and downsize to something that needed just a new lick of paint. As designer Jason Bricknell realized, it was a bigger challenge than that. A two month project became a two year adventure. With marble lending subtle class, the brief was for a Continental style in white, grey and blue. The couple’s musical daughter plays piano, guitar and sax, which added these handsome instruments to the décor.

While the owners bought the home ‘with’ its furniture, there was still opportunity for Jason to design some dramatic set pieces and have them made by top, local manufacturers.
By day, the artful light fixtures are like hanging sculptures as the ample windows flood the living area with light. The blue/ silver colour scheme is incorporated into design pieces.
The effect of mirrors throughout the house cannot be underestimated and especially in Winter, it lifts every space with natural light. The choice of reflective tones adds further to this airy atmosphere.
With twenty four months of building, the garden was mostly destroyed but that was an opportunity to landscape the surrounds of the pool-house and gazebo just how they wanted them.. Even after all the new renovations, it is a home that retains a calm, timeless quality.
The owners started off wanting an old, romantic, French look and with a little expert nudging they got an elegant, European, slightly more modern result. So much for downsizing!
