At New York Fashion Week, East meets West in one-of-a-kind stunners by designer Naeem Anthony of Helen Anthonys.
This Saturday on Top Billing we jet off to New York where Jeannie steps into an outfit that’s Eastern, African and Western all in one. It is the first unisex collection from the outrageously gifted designer Naeem Anthony and the label Helen Anthony named after his great grandmother.
When Naeem combined his great grandmother’s name Helen with his surname Anthony, in his label, it reflected a man who reveres women.
Coming from a label better known for menswear, the blurred boundaries of this unisex collection excited a New York press used to the gender divide in fashion.
Incorporating patterns from Mehndi, the ancient, Indian practice of body art - this vision of Autumn/ Winter 2018 stood out from the crowd at New York Fashion Week. The gender neutral range, rich in embroidery and embellishment, blends contemporary design with classical style. What Jeannie realized the moment she entered Naeem’s studio is the sheer amount of original work in each look.
Using cultural emblems to fuse men’s and women’s fashion, this collection traces its roots all the way back to a young boy who was never satisfied with clothes which hung on rails and sat on shelves – so he dressed himself.
