Ceramicist Zizipho Poswa shares her distinctive clay art
This Thursday on Top Billing we join Zizipho Poswa as she creates the hand-pinched ceramics she now ships across the globe.
When Zizipho Poswa and Andile Dyalvane began their business eleven years ago, they had no capital - just skill and vision. Today, they export to New York and Paris, nine out of ten of their clients are from abroad and their abstract but functional work is the pride of the South African ceramics industry.
The name of their business is Imiso, which means tomorrow and the promise in that word was realized when they exhibited in New York within a year of opening.
It was a family member who first invested in the business so it makes her mother beam to be enjoying lunch off plates made by Zizipho.
Zizipho’s hand-pinched style immediately set her work apart. She applies creative glazes in smudges and layers and then scratches on details and only after firing is the depth of her work revealed.
