A Grand tour of the Houghton mansion
We explore a triple-storey mansion in the sky by designer Stephen Pellerade.
For a hundred years, Houghton was renowned for early twentieth century design and art deco apartment blocks. That image has now been updated and dramatically redefined.
Houghton in old Johannesburg has been catapulted into 2017 by a new development and its crowning glory is a modern, triple storey apartment, three years in the making.
When designer Stephen Pellerade got the brief, this week’s featured home was only a shell. He soon put his magic to it creating a masterpiece.
The al fresco shower deck, spa and gym are part of what Stephen calls “extravagant necessities” - the nice-to-haves you find space for when there are three floors and a big budget, to play with.
Two levels are devoted to living the best of the good life with a baby grand piano to play if the mood takes you. When the family do retire for the night, it is again, in style.
