Top Billing explores Etosha National Park with Mokuti Etosha Lodge
The salt pans and wildlife of Northern Namibia are a magnet for visitors and photographers from around the world. Lucky for us, sights like Etosha National Park are on our doorstep, a short flight or one spectacular desert road-trip away!
The local Ovambo people named the lodge where we stayed Mokuti, which means ‘In the Forest’. It is an oasis compared to the nearby salt-pan which they call Etosha known as the place with the ‘Great White dunes’.
Mokuti Etosha Lodge is thatched with grass from the savannah and has a classic, traditional safari feel.
It is amazingly situated next to Etosha National Park and also sits on 4 000 hectares of private game reserve. The lodge offers 114 comfortable rooms, with amazing restaurant and spa facilities.
As for the amazing local wildlife, we wanted to see animals unique to this part of Africa and we were not disappointed. Hyena, oryx, kudu, giraffe and elephants, the tallest in Africa, were just a few of the species spotted.
A day of game spotting can really work up an appetite, and Chef Brian Prinz sorted us out with a delicious marinated game rump paired with purees and chocolate and red wine sauce.
The greens served with the dish are grown locally, and the game does not come any more grass fed or free-range. Even the olive oil is proudly African too!
When it comes to unwinding, a rushed spa treatment in the city can’t hold a candle to enjoying one in the tranquil African bush, and the Mokuti team are trained in several styles of massage – from Balinese to Swedish.
In a place we had expected to find only salt pans but had been met by forests and Africa’s tallest elephants, Etosha is a land of surprises, and it’s great looking forward to the next one!
