Top Billing meets milliner Crystal Birch
Named among the Top One Hundred SA Designers, Crystal Birch makes one-of-a-kind hats for musicians, the biggest names in fashion, media personalities, and everyday people.
Crystal has always had a great love for fashion, and even gained valuable experience working as a stylist on big TV commercials. Today she is revitalising the local millinery industry with her hats, and was chosen by MD of Parisian Milliners, Harry Faktor, to keep his family legacy and business, which first opened in 1936, alive.
The legacy of the factory, label and the Faktor name is not lost on Crystal, and she understands and embraces the responsibility of slowly taking over from Harry and adapting the hat game, while still maintaining the incredibly happy family of long-time employees at the factory.
The output of the business sustains forty families, creating superb hats made by local hands.
Her work is popular with celebrities, and she has designed for Phumzile van Damme, Francois van Coke and David Kramer among others, while also collaborating with high end designers like Rich Mnisi and Orapeleng Modutle.
The latter commisoned a stunning Texan hat for business woman Lebogang Mmatli for the Veuve Clicquot Masters Polo 2019 at Val De Vie, and the results were amazing!
It’s not all about celebs though, and Crystal has an amazing support structure in her fiancé Christiaan Beyers and her sweet two-year-old daughter.
While she is going from one success to another, there's no time to relax as she's preparing for a British Vogue Pop up in London, showing the world exactly what local talent can do with authentic South African materials!
