Top Billing features artist Dario Manjate Mozambican artist Dario Manjate’s work has been seen in many homes on Top Billing over the years, so it was about time we meet the man himself.
Dario’s journey started in 1994 when he arrived from Mozambique and was raised by his grandparents. He tried his hand at art at a youth centre and discovered the path he was meant to take.
Collage is not an easy medium, but it was the most accessible option because he didn’t have the money for expensive oil paint or equipment.
Magazines, glue and sealer are now the foundation of his thriving career in fine-art. His works feature a lot of women figures and it goes back to Dario losing his mother at a young age and being raised by his gogo and a community of women.
The mark of the artist’s hand in the arrangement of each piece gives collectors a sense that they’re connected to Dario. For home-owner Gina Bester, every cutting pasted into her two portraits, reflects a moment of creation.
