Top Billing explores Simon's Town
With the adventure sports of coasteering and a new kind of wetbiking having just reached our shores, our real-life Aquaman, Ryle de Morny, got the scoop.
The port of Simons’ Town offers a lovely drive, shopping, naval history and fine-dining, and we experienced the best that it has to offer.
Just south of town is Tintswalo at Boulders. It sits in fynbos surrounds, looking right onto the white sands, granite boulders and African penguins which attract visitors from all over the world. According to CEO Lisa Goosen, making guests feel at home is the main priority, and the number of guests wo choose to extend their stay indicate that it’s working!
Offering amazing accommodation and delicious food (cooked by Head Chef Thando Jaxa) paired with beautiful surroundings and excellent service, you’d be hard pressed to find a better home away from home!
If you’re a lover of adventure, there are plenty of activities on offer nearby, and False Bay is a magnet for snorkelers or beach-combers exploring the coves made up by giant Cape granite boulders.
What adventure specialist Andrew Kellett has brought to the party is more like kloofing or canyoning for the ocean. Coasteering is a combo of rock jumping and snorkelling, and offers jumps of up to 8 metres for the more adventurous.
Guiding groups of up to sixteen people, Andrew designed this adventure with his wife Marie-Louise Kellett, an Environmental Science honours graduate who focuses on nature-based tourism.
Simon’s Town is a breeze of a walk from Boulders and the local Waterfront is at the heart of this working naval base and yacht club. For those who want to explore the ocean and get some exercise without too much fuss, Ros Potgieter has a stunning new answer.
Water biking is an incredible way to explore the area’s coastline and see the local marine wildlife, and Simon’s Town is the only place in South Africa where you can enjoy the fun activity. Ryle took to it like a duck in water!
If you’re after a cosy, sea-scape getaway, Simon’s Town and Boulders are perfect for travelling this winter!
