Discover the story behind the latest craft beer crave, Soweto gold
From gogo ginger beer to the latest finest lager, Top Billing introduces you to the family man behind craft beer Soweto Gold.
Straddling the economic divide between the rich and poor and brandishing a deep cultural heritage, Soweto has become one of South Africa’s most recognisable brands. Jonathan set off to meet a man who's taken his grandmother's secret recipe and literally spun it into liquid gold!
Six years ago, far from Soweto, Ndumiso Madlala sat in a brewing class in England as his peers introduced themselves and the breweries they own across the U.K. At that moment, he realized that he wanted to brew a brand of his own, here at home – and he’s done it.
For Desire Madlala, mother of 9 year old Usiphile and 2 year old Udumo, it was a leap of faith seeing her husband give up well paid jobs with big brewers to go on his own.
Ndumiso’s ginger beer sells ten thousand litres a month. For his broad client base he brews seasonal beers like Stout in the winter, he’s successfully aged beer in whiskey barrels and so his brand grows. His target is to make his brew the best selling beer in Africa, available worldwide and his record suggests he’ll do it.
