Top Billing meets design duo Quiteria and George
Before George Maledu and Quiteria Lebogang Kekana were exhibiting in France and designing for the Queen of R’nB, their runways were the dusty roads of Bram Fischerville in Soweto.
Beating unemployment, their design skills and drive saw them create their own work, and they even had a few celebrities visiting them then for fittings.
Quiteria designed by day while waitering in the evenings but once his mother Violet Kekana saw him and George work together, she knew success wasn’t far off, and she was right.
With the opening of a formal studio in Melville, the guys were increasingly a part of the city’s design scene, and they showcased their “METAMORPHOSIS” line at AFI Joburg Fashion Week.
After showing their work in Durban the pair were picked to exhibit at the Eiffel tower in Paris. After that, they received a call from the team of Global singing icon, Beyonce ahead of the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100.
The two got two work immediately, and after two weeks sent a few sketches back. They were commissioned to design 45 pieces for Beyonce, Jay Z and their dancers, and the rest is history.
The design duo’s success is the result of a lot of hard work and dedication, and in future the two want to continue proving everyone’s notion of what an African designer ‘should’ be wrong.
Their long term goal is to live and work in New York, and judging by the rate which their label is growing, that won’t take long!
