Back to the beginning with radio DJ Nick Hamman
We visit the radio studio in Stellenbosch where everything started for Nick Hamman and his producer Mad Money Mike.
Nick’s eight to ten morning show is said to have the station’s fastest growing listenership. At 25, the Cape Town born DJ has risen to this position with dizzying speed. As with his first gig on campus radio, his appeal is about having substance behind the style.
He’s studied politics, philosophy, he’s a drummer, DJ, reads prolifically and it all combines to make him someone you want to listen to. Nick’s radio content looks set to make him a classic in his field. Instead of sourcing material off YouTube all day, his ideas are of his own design and so we’d laid on a ride befitting such an original.
On subjects that aren’t his forte, Nick is always willing to learn. To be a class act you need to have started young and built an impressive repertoire. As an entertainer, Nick was already a jazz drummer playing in clubs at the age of fourteen. At 16 he started jamming with bands on the indie scene. He began moving between different genres like hip hop, house, rock and punk, arriving at university as quite a polished act.
In the music field, Nick is a versatile producer and DJ too - with a decade of gigging experience. Whatever the venue, playing live comes naturally and since he didn’t want to just produce, he found a creative way to incorporate live elements into his set. With pads, controllers and live drumming, he became as popular at student gigs as beer and pizza.
